Some of the biggest changes on the Coast right now aren’t visible yet — they’re still on the drawing board.
You may already know Sunshine Coast Stadium is being expanded from 1,046 seats to around 10,000. What’s new is how it’s actually going to look. Architectus, the firm behind Sunshine Coast University Hospital, has been appointed to lead the design, with early concepts favouring open concourses and a roofline shaped around the coastline rather than a generic stadium form. Site works begin before the end of 2026, with construction underway from 2027. Mayor Rosanna Natoli says the build will generate around 650 jobs along the way, on top of the venue itself once it’s finished.
The stadium is part of the $7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments. It sits within Kawana Sports Precinct, 45 hectares that already take in nine sporting fields, Lake Kawana, the High Performance Training Facility and the Kawana Aquatic Centre. Once complete, the stadium becomes the precinct’s biggest drawcard yet.
